Grace's Note

I picked up this brochure from Southern Humboldt Chamber of Commerce in 2023 in Klamath, California (while visiting the Trees of Mystery!). While most brochure titles include the name of the attraction or organization that’s being advertised, this one starts with Discover Your Journey…it’s a phrase that grabs your attention and invites you to read more.

The graphic on the front is reminiscent of 1950s design styles. The stars on either side of the graphic don’t stand out enough against the dark background image, although the effect is appreciated. The choice of background image incorporates beautiful shades of green and shows off the scenery of Southern Humboldt. Paired with the hiking trail that goes further into the trees, the overall design on the front invites you to open the brochure and learn more…

On the inside, 3 panels show fun activities to do around Southern Humboldt. My favorite part? How many different types of stars/sparkles/glitter are used in this design. They’re gold this time, so they stand out against the background images!

Unfolding the brochure even further reveals a friendly map of Southern Humboldt. While this map is informative, its main purpose is to highlight fun activities to do in the region. The little graphics make it nice to look at, and the colors are interesting without being overwhelming. They also opted for a new font choice — the map font feels playful and adventurous, creating a different effect compared to the more decorative font used previously.

Folding the map up and turning to the back of the brochure, we can see how the front and back connect. The image of the forest shown on the front panel is actually one continuous image, which shows off some incredibly lush ferns. The colors in the Southern Humboldt Chamber of Commerce logo pair nicely with the greenery of the background image. The contrast of the white text against the image also improves readability, which is appreciated.
